One of the top New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight, to get back into the skinny jean. Heck, there was even a blog titled ‘Back in Skinny Jeans‘ entirely about body image. But when it comes to wearing denim, it doesn’t have to be about fitting back in those ‘skinny jeans’ whether they’re actually skinny jeans or a pair of bell bottoms from 1978, the fact is bodies change and so do denim fits, and there is probably something out there that looks just as good on you.
Here are my denim resolutions:
1. Don’t get caught up in a number.
Many women have a size we refuse to wear. I have actually refused to buy something if it is a size that makes me feel bad. Whether it fits perfectly or not, is not the issue, I have admittedly gotten caught up in the number. With denim, fits may require different sizing, a high waist may require a higher size than a low rise or vice versa depending on the brand and the cut. A pair of jeans won’t look good if they’re too small. They just won’t.
2. Keep an open mind.
Denim trends change all the time. Not all of them are worthy of jumping on board… I’ve noted several times my reluctance to wear ripped jeans. However, after scoffing at jeggings for years when I tried on my first pair it was love. I never think that a particular silhouette makes or breaks a look as much as the individual cut on a particular piece. With denim, it’s all about the fit, and designers are tweaking the fits every year so a pair of skinny jeans or a flared jean won’t be exactly how the style fit before. So keep and open mind about new denim styles, it might be surprising which will make the perfect pair!
3. Take better care.
I have always just thrown my jeans in the wash. Cold wash, inside out, and never dried…but even that wears on denim after a while. This year I’m going to take better care of some of my nicer pairs of jeans. Holding out as long as possible with the wears, freeze cleaning them, dry cleaning even. That way, the wash is preserved as much as possible.
