Dressing Up Denim: The Denim Shirt Goes Femme

By Ann of Holier than Now

It’s a year or so after the denim shirt became a staple of the fashion set, and now there’s a great comfort level with this piece.  We’re at ease with the denim-on-denim look, and of course a laid-back, Western-influenced jean shirt and suede pant ensemble … but now we’re beginning to dress up this basic as well.

I found inspiration in two sets of street style looks – the first is demure, with the denim shirt swapped out for a sweet blouse.  This is ultra-simple to achieve with your favorite full a line skirt or vintage number.  The next look surprised me in its chic sexiness: denim shirts paired with sleek, black skirts … here, it’s just about replacing your classic crisp white shirt.

If you’re suddenly inclined to look at your denim shirt in a more feminine light, here are four pieces to get the look.

1. Rebecca Taylor Floral Print Skirt ($295)

2. Le Mont St. Michel Gathered Skirt ($325)

3. David Lerner Leather Inset Skirt ($138.60 – was $198)

4. Oonagh by Nanette Lepore Rex Pencil Skirt ($99 – was $198)

What’s your favorite way to wear your denim shirt?  I have to say … mine is with white jeans (kind of Ralph Lauren-esque).
