I don’t know about the rest of the country, but New York has been having a crazy fall. I know I’ve talked (pretty extensively) about how much I love the weather we’ve been having and how lovely it is, and I suppose today is no exception. The weekend before last it snowed in Manhattan, and today it’s supposed to reach 68 degrees!
These strangely warm temperatures in typically cold months always causes me to pause in front of my closet. Could I get away with bare legs today? Sure. Does it really feel appropriate? Not exactly. At this point, just a few weeks from Thanksgiving, I’ve sort “put my legs away” for the season, if that makes sense. The happy compromise? Pairing short little things – especially denim shorts, with tights!
There are so many ways to work this look, it almost feels more versatile than a pair of dark denim skinny jeans. Seriously!
Here are a few of my favorite ways to take your summer cut-offs into the colder months:
- Spice things up with colored or textured tights. (I love these lace stripe ones by Commando.)
- Dress up your look with wedges for a dinner date or a night out.
- Keep things super cozy with layers of sweaters, scarves and flat, knee-high boots. (My heart stops for these Madewell boots.)
- Give your distressed shorts a more uptown feel with menswear-inspired loafers or slippers.
Today I paired mine (made from an old pair of 7 For All Mankind Dojo jeans) with a raspberry-hued button down shirt, velvet slippers and my new favorite thing – my faux fur vest.
Will you embrace this denim pairing this fall and into the winter?

You look great, lovely! I love the deep red with the fur. I never knew how to wear cutoffs in the cold, but you make it look easy 🙂

Great look! I like it!
I saw this trend last winter in Europe and I was not a fan. However, your styling looks much better. Thanks for the new perspective 🙂
What a coincidence, I put up a post today wearing my light denim shorts! I paired mine with some textured tights, ankle boots and a turtleneck. I’m all about extending pieces from summer into fall dressing.
I love your take, especially with the faux fur vest.
I love your outfit here! Shorts with tights is one of my go-to looks right now too. It’ll be 40 degrees in the morning then 69 by the afternoon here in Portland. I’m not even going to pretend to understand what is going on. But shorts with tights seem to be the perfect compromise.

I love the shorts with tights look, but I don’t have the guts to wear my cut offs that way just yet! Maybe if I could find a more elegant pair of shorts I’d do it…
Very cute!!
Your look is fantastic, I totally get what you’re saying. I have a similar outfit on my blog…aren’t faux fur vests amazing??
Loving everything, vest & shirt especially. And I’m pretty sure I need those flats like, yesterday. Where did they come from?
Favorite! The colors are perfect. I have been wanting a similar fur vest! love the tights and shorts too. cute blog!
