Denim Tips: Winterizing The Denim Shirt-Dress

I don’t know if you know this, but Wednesday was the official first day of winter. Winter. That’s right, all this frigid cold we’ve had over the past week? That’s just an aggressive “See ya!” from Autumn. Real nice, huh?

Anyway, now that we’re really here, lets talk about something we all know to be true: Winter is not that cute. You see all the editorials and photos on Pinterest of girls galavanting in the snow in sweater tights and a floppy hat and some dreamy dress and you think to yourself, “Yes! This winter I’m going to be so cute!” Next thing you know it’s 15 degrees and you’re wearing schleppy boots, a calf-length down jacket and a wool hat pulled down over your entire face.

Maybe I’m exaggerating a little. We’re all fashionable people after all. So let’s back up, save that giant jacket for February snows, and talk about now. It’s the perfect time to get creative with your layering and make your LDD (little denim dress) work for frigid temps.

First of all, tights. I’m wearing a pair of super opaque black tights as well as knee-high socks under my boots. I also belted the dress so that my figure isn’t completely lost under all that sweater. You can work and re-work this look at least 3 different ways:

1. Layer a plaid flannel under your denim dress (with a belt over both) and pop your collars. Throw a blazer and faux fur vest on over that and you’ll be totally toasty (and pretty preppy).

2. Wear your shirt dress unbuttoned over black leggings and a tunic-length top. Layer a blanket scarf over that, add a trapper hat and moto boots.

3. Pull your coziest cable knit sweater on over your dress, letting the tails hang out, and add a woven brown belt to define your waist. Add a pashmina, a down vest, and chic little leather gloves.

We must embrace the cute as long as we can. February will find us. It will find me, and I’m worried about what that means for my denim style.

How do you stay chic & warm in the winter? Seriously, how? I need to know.

I love the sweater over the dress look! We have similar styles as well 🙂
