Every girl has one. It’s either clipped and hung in the back of your closet, or buried in a drawer, under piles of folded shorts and pants, gathering sartorial dust. I’m talking about the denim mini skirt. In it’s various incarnations, it was a go-to in my wardrobe for the better part of a decade.
Flash forward to New York City in 2011, and I haven’t even thought about a denim mini in what feels like years. It’s been replaced by leather shorts, pleated skirts and maxis, to name a few. In short, it’s dated. As a New York City girl on a budget, I can’t overhaul my wardrobe each season. I have to shop my closet and find a way to give old clothes new life.
I came across my denim mini the other day in a (futile) attempt to create more space in my closet. It still fits like a dream and flatters my fading summer tan, so why shouldn’t I try and resuscitate it? I decided to give it a whirl, using a few of my favorite pieces of the moment: menswear-inspired shoes and a crisp button down shirt.
The key to reviving an old stand-by is to mix it with current pieces and create a fresh look. Et voila – familiar and fashion-forward.
If you can’t seem to find your mini from days gone by, I love this dark denim Hudson skirt.
