Denim Tips: How To Wear Jeans To Thanksgiving

Can’t you just smell the turkey roasting in the oven already? Thanksgiving is just a couple of days away, and my stomach is already growling in anticipation. I’ll be staying put in NYC for the holiday, cooking with roommates and friends at my apartment, so my outfit can be just about anything I want. Most years though, I’ve spent the holiday amongst family and a bit dressed up.

Whether you’re spending the holiday with your family, your friends or Charlie Brown on your television, I’m convinced there’s an appropriate way to work denim into your turkey-gobbling look. It’s all about how you mix it in, and of course – that all important stretch.

Here are my best tips for working denim into your Thanksgiving ensemble:

  • It’s the holidays – why not sparkle? Pairing your denim with a sequined or embellished top is an easy way to take your jeans from casual to candle-light ready. This drapey, open cardigan over a simple, silk blouse with dark denim flares and black wedges would be perfection.
  • If you dare to go the skinny jeans route – don’t forget the stretch. I would pair a dark denim or black denim legging with knee high boots. Depending on if your festivities will be more casual or more formal, you can top things off with the above sequins and silk combination, or a tunic-length, oversized-but-not-sloppy sweater that will discretely cover your well-fed stomach.
  • Perhaps Thanksgiving is the perfect time to show your family just how well you’ve mastered the art of wearing colorful denim – with red or brown jeans (like these Rag & Bone skinnies) and a crisp blazer.
  • A denim shirt dress can also be dressed up with tights, a bold necklace and wedges to be perfectly dinner-appropriate. Just don’t forget to loosen your belt after that second helping of pumpkin pie!

Will you rock a little denim on Thanksgiving?

Finally a fashion blog that embraces denim and doesn’t think it’s boring! Your top photo has just inspired my Thanskgiving Day look! I have some Madewell flares that look just like that. I’m curious, though – where did you find the leopard cardigan? And are those Nine West boots? 🙂

So glad you like it Laura, and glad I could provide a little inspiration! The cardigan is Tory Burch, and the boots are Coach (borrowed from my roommate, haha.)

Casual elegance is how I would describe your photo. Looks comfortable too, perfect for a friends gettogether!

I love the idea of being able to be comfortable yet still look put together on Thanksgiving. This is a holiday that can often be uncomfortable about an hour in when you start to regret wearing that high-wasted skirt or that dress that’s a little too fitting. I say jeans with some stretch, ALL the way! 🙂
