Denim Pairings: The New Leather Jacket

By Ann of Holier than Now

So … When I was about 11 I had a plain black t-shirt.  It was simple and versatile and I liked wearing it with the one pair of jeans I owned.  One day, I went to transfer it from washer to dryer and it was just … gone.  My mom must have felt bad for me crawling around in the dark behind the machines searching for this lost favorite, because she eventually confessed that she took it and threw it away … wait for it … because she thought it made me look “TOO TOUGH.”  So ridiculous!

As a result a) I always feel like a rebel in a black tee and b) I hated leather jackets – that other great jean pairing – because I got thatlooks too tough bad feeling my mom gave me back in the day!

I thought I was scarred for life until the Fall ’12 collections started rolling down the runways last week.  Not only were leather jackets paired with feminine chiffons and prints – this not so new, just a nice reminder – but there were just so many fresh interpretations to choose from.  I had a real “get on my body” moment at Charlotte Ronson with that perfect, longer jacket shown first above.  Imagine it with a pair of skinny jeans!

Because a leather jacket is quite seasonless and also pretty expensive, I want to try to score one at the end of this season rather than wait until Fall.  On my mental list are those longer shapes shown at Charlotte Ronson and Lacoste – hitting at the hip or below, which I think takes that tough rocker edge off – or potentially a sophisticated dark metallic version like those at Rebecca Minkoff and Tibi.

While scouring for contenders, I came across 3 unique jackets cuts below – all at very deep discounts – with a trench thrown in for good measure (it was just too marked down to keep to myself).

1. Kelly Bergin Leather Trench Coat $598.50 (was $1995)

2. BB Dakota Pearlman Leather Moto Jacket $166.50 (was $238)

3. Thakoon Layered Leather Jacket $780 (was $2600)

4. Donna Karan Casual Luxe Vintage Leather Bomber $898.50 (was $2995)

Are you a fan of the leather jacket or do you agree with my mom that certain things are just … too tough?  Ha!

Love this post, it’s so true about how our mom’s can traumatize certain wardrobe choices–to this day peterpan collars and bright red are still hard for me, lol. Love a good leather jacket and it’s been awhile since I had one–definitely on the wish list for fall.

Love the post… I love leather, jackets, skirts, pant and even touches of leather on sweaters- It’s such a fabulous material. Don’t let your mothers idea’s scare you off, go for it!
