Trend: Dressed-Up Denim Pairings

by Ann of Holier Than Now

The denim cut-off deserves a pat on the back.  Once the uniform of Coors Light-drinking, bikini top-wearing, flip-flop slapping fun, our beloved chopped jean is making its way up … to Fashion Week street style, and maybe a cocktail hour or two.

Dressed-up denim is great inspiration for shopping your closet.  The theme is “opposites attract” – take your most feminine, silky top or your most chic structured piece and pair it with your favorite cut-offs.  The shoe can dress it up (for me, a platform sandal) or keep it way down (a flip flop is fair game).

I scoured the sales for this game of outfit Frankenstein (where no model’s hand survives!) and found a few pieces perfect for dress-up/dress-down play:

  1. Tucker Smocked Collar Blouse ($288) + sass & bide The Wild Denim Shorts ($100 – 50% off)
  2. Kimberly Ovitz Sawyer Asymmetrical Shirt ($227.50 – 30% off) + Genetic Denim The Hagan High Rise Cutoff Shorts ($92.50 – 30% off)
  3. Bop Basics The Fiancé Blazer ($198) + Free People Cutoff Shorts ($68)
  4. Tucker Slim Fit Button Down ($250) + Maison Scotch Pasadena Denim Shorts ($86.80 – 30% off)

Would you ever dress up a cutoff for work or evening … or do you relegate these guys to the weekend?

Oohhh I just tried on that pair in #3 at Bloomingdales in SoHo this weekend and I actually thought, would I ever go dressy with these? Honestly, I have yet to do that – it’s just a mental block I have.

I’ve seen plenty of ladies in the city this summer rocking vintage Levi’s 501 cut offs (and high on the waist, too) with blouses and heels…just not sure if I can jump in yet.

yeah I don’t know that I’d do the heels, but I am definitely way more open to blouses after doing this post. It’s funny that I would be too lazy to just TRY IT ON from my closet … instead I have to photoshop a bunch of pics to convince myself. : )

Great post – I have a firm no denim pants rule but I do make an exception for the cutoff! I would do a cutoff with a heel always but have in the recent past worn my fave pair of combat boots with it. There’s something about denim pants that are so uncomfortable to me… either way great work and thanks for checking out my site
