The Perfect Pair: Wedge Sneakers and Denim

Newsflash: Wedge sneakers are IN. Kidding, unless you’ve been hiding under a sartorial rock for the past year, you know that wedge sneakers are the hottest trend in fashion-forward footwear, and surprisingly, more than just a fad, nearly two years after Isabel Marant sent the trend in motion.

I’ll admit that I originally approached this trend with mixed emotions. Perhaps the same way in which I reacted to my first pair of Reebok Pumps . They’re really cool, but seem difficult to pull off. But after a little research and careful planning, totally doable and quite easy to pair. And while some like The Man Repeller and Kate Bosworth have paired them with dresses and skirts, we believe denim and wedge sneakers are the perfect match.

How to Wear Wedge Sneakers with Denim

Fit + Style: This one is paramount. Just imagine a pair of wide leg jeans and wedge sneakers. The horror!  Or more importantly, what a waist of a fancy pair of footwear! We suggest pairing your wedges with full length skinny jeans. The shoes are the highlight here, so the less busy the better.  For warmer months, we also love the look of denim cut offs and wedge sneakers. While we normally wouldn’t say pair a Chloé patchwork denim top with your sneaks like seen above — this totally works because it’s the top having the party, not the bottom. Balance is key.

Color : As we mentioned above, fit is important. But color is also essential. While it depends on the color of your shoe, we’d stay away from printed materials and distressed styles — remember, all eyes on the shoes. But with fashion, the beauty lies in your personal style so if you want to rock your Mother floral jeans with your sneaks then go for it! If going distressed, we love the combo of a subtle ripped knee like these Rag & Bone Sinnies. You can go with a more monochromatic look, or a classic blue or dark jean works well. Black is always a winner in our book. We’re partial to this pair by J Brand.  One good way to mix it up without going overboard is to choose a less conventional material, like coated denim or black leather.

Are you a fan of the wedge sneaker? How do you pair them with denim?
