Street Style: Fashion Coterie September 2011

by taylordavies

Yesterday I attended my first big trade show on behalf of Eat, Sleep, Denim: Fashion Coterie! It’s being held at the Javits Center over on the West Side of the city, and the sheer size of the venue was enough to have me cowering in my ankle-zip J Brands. Never the less, Nando and I scoured the rows and rows (and rows) of booths as big as a living room, checking out the Spring/Summer 2012 offerings from favorites such as Paige Premium, Doctrine, and Textile Elizabeth and James. Between the racks of neon shorts and tie-died carpenter denim, we also found ourselves drawn to the stylish women working at Coterie.

Let’s have a moment for this poppy red blouse and deep eggplant skinnies combination, with cool, studded boots and a striped sweater. I would have never in a million closets thought to combine all these elements, and I can’t get over how great they look together.

Skinny cuts seemed to be the rule of the day, as did sensible-yet-chic flats and boots. I would imagine that spending a whole day on the floor, selling your line or running around placing buying orders for your retailer would be exhausting and a little rough on your feet.

When we approached this woman to take her photo she was caught totally off-guard. However, her look was a stand-out for me, amongst to the dozens of well-dressed people we came across. Her sequin jacket paired with medium-wash rolled jeans (with cool whiskering) is just the right mix of casual, comfortable glamour that’s just right for a long day of work in the fashion industry. I have no idea if it was intentional or not, but her imperfect, uneven rolls are actually, well, perfect.
