Maternity Denim: Tips from Ann of Holier than Now

SO, there comes a point in a woman’s life where it may become necessary to purchase a pair of maternity denim… This can be daunting due to all of the implications brought on by pregnancy so to make things a bit easier we interviewed a lady who knows the deal. Ann Coville Somma of Holier than Now, mother of an adorable little boy, divulges tips you should know when purchasing a pair of maternity denim:

Eat, Sleep, Denim: Was it necessary to buy several pairs of maternity denim per trimester?

Ann Coville Somma: No… I didn’t buy maternity jeans until maybe 5 months and I recommend people hold out … one trick is to just buy a size or 2 up, which I did and wore them for ages until i finally went to a true maternity jean with elastic waistband. Also, with jeggings being so in, you can rock a jegging with an elastic waistband far far into your pregnancy!

ESD: What type of fit did you find most comfortable? (lower rise/ higher rise)

ACS: Lower rise for sure.

ESD: When choosing a size — did you go with a larger waist even though the elastic allows for growth?

ACS: Hate to break it to the world but it’s not just the waist that grows, your butt and thighs grow also, so you really have to start from scratch when trying on jeans from about 3 months preg onwards … even though you might not even have a real belly yet, your body changes a lot.  My #1 tip for maternity jeans would be, “Throw what you know about your body out the window!!

ESD: Who made your favorite everyday go to pair of denim?

ACS: Citizens.

ESD: What do you think about shopping online for maternity denim?

ACS: For the first pair, it’s really impossible because you don’t know your body at all anymore!  Everything changes … you have to try stuff on.  But if you find a design you like you could always buy more online.

Great post! I know I’m going to need to splurge on at least one pair of designer maternity jeans when the time comes. I figure I’ll be fine on tops because I tend toward flowier looks anyway, but I dread the idea of not fitting into my precious denim collection!

Great post! When I was pregnant a very long time ago, maternity denim was nightmarish. Thank goodness there are so many more stylish options available.
