Denim Style: Going West

I was first introduced to Going West a while back by my fellow style-blogging friend Meghan. I was immediately drawn to Jennie’s personal style because she’s got this California-cool way about her (even though she’s from Iowa) and I couldn’t pull off half the things she wears. She mixes slick white blazers with her skinny jeans and leopard print with her flares – so it’s only natural that I picked her brain earlier this week to find out about her current denim cravings and style go-tos.

What is your denim philosophy?

Denim is the ultimate go-to. Whenever I’m stumped wondering what to wear, I know I can start with a pair of trustworthy denim as a foundation and build on it, whether it’s a white tee and leather jacket or a structured blouse and platform pumps. It’s the one article of clothing that everyone should own at least one of because it’s one of the most versatile items you’ll have.

What do you wear with your denim?

What don’t I wear with denim! On the weekends, you can find me in skinny jeans, ankle boots, a leather jacket and band tee with layers of rings and necklaces. And at work, I’ll wear wide leg or skinny jeans with a comfortable pair of heels with a shirt and blazer and statement jewelry. I’ll mix almost anything with my favorite jeans.

What are your favorite denim brands?

My preferences for denim brands change over the years, but I’ve really liked wearing J Brand and Levi’s lately. However, I like to try new brands from time to time. Levi’s can endure the test of time. And there’s something about the history of the brand I just love. It’s as American as apple pie. My parents wore Levi’s and their parents did too, and I like that emotional tie. J Brand makes just about any style and color you could ask for. I just bought some wax-coated J Brand jeans that I can’t wait to mix with other pieces in my closet.

Do you have a very favorite pair of jeans?

I’ve been wearing a pair of Levi’s skinny denim forever now. I picked them up at the Levi’s outlet store for maybe less than $30 last summer. They may have faded slightly, and that’s it. And for as often as I wear them, I’m surprised they aren’t falling apart. They haven’t stretched, shrunk or ripped. That’s how I know I’ll love a pair of jeans forever.

Tell us a little about the jeans you wear the most often?

In general, I will always fall back on skinny jeans when I can’t decide what to wear. When worn with heels, they make legs go on for miles – something I love as someone who is only 5′ 4″. And dark washes are my favorite because they’re flattering and can be dressed up or down.

What’s on your denim wish list?

I just checked wax-coated denim off the list! Now I have my eye on some red William Rast Kara skinny jeans. They’re a deep red, which I think will be more my style than something bright. I’m also curious to try a pair of Citizens of Humanity Angie Panorama red twill pants. They have a higher rise and bell bottom leg. I think they would look awesome with some of my vintage band tees.

Do you remember the first pair of jeans you ever owned?

I’ve probably been wearing jeans since birth. I grew up a total tomboy. If I wasn’t wearing Disney cotton shirt/pant combo outfits, I was in jeans. You wouldn’t catch me in a dress. Ever.
