Celebrate the Holidays in Style With Comfortable Denim

Some people come from families that dress nice for the holidays. They wear pretty dresses, ironed shirts and sit at nicely decorated tables with real forks and knives. My family has always been casual, so much that you could actually show up wearing sweat pants (and I’m not talking Opening Ceremony speckled sweats with Rag & Bone cotton dinner jacket…though that would be a good idea). I’ve lazed the couch all day with a bowl of tortilla chips on my stomach watching re-runs of Overboard on Thanksgiving.

So what do you wear on days like this? Many families, like to keep it casual. Should you dress to the nines when it’s just not appropriate? That’s where denim comes in. The thing I like about denim, is no matter what, I can be stylish without being out of place.

The Myth of The Elastic Waistband

Every year people say, “wear clothes with elastic waistbands.” Every year. Every year, I realize I don’t have clothes with elastic waistbands. Real clothes anyway. I have leggings, all of which are for working out and/or sleeping…which ever stint I happen to be on. The truth is, no matter what season, stylish elastic waistband clothing is hard to come by. There are some amazing options you can use for the holidays when eating is the number one priority.

Denim Leggings

Denim Leggings are great, every time I wear them, people compliment them and are shocked when they find out they’re denim leggings. While most denim leggings come with a zipper like normal jeans (they’re just as comfortable by the way.) There are some great pull on denim leggings, which do a great job of keeping everything in, yet have the same comfort as normal leggings. Charley 5.0 3-Way Zip and the Baby Snap (now on sale for $69). I have them both and wear them ALL the time. Helmut Lang also has few great pairs of pull on panel denim leggings. Which would also be great for parties during the holiday season. There will be eating there too!

Skinny Slouch

I’ve just realized, that most of my skinny jeans are kind of slouchy. The only super tight jeans I like are denim leggings, because I’m not about to go through the discomfort of getting that perfectly tight jean. Skinny slouch jeans are the skinny jeans that have juuust a little bit of room. One good rule of thumb, is can I easily fit my thumb in the waistband? Those are the jeans for the holidays then! Skinny slouch jeans are fitted enough to look sharp and comfortable enough to gorge. That’s the perfect jean. I’ve had my eye on the PRPS Heirloom Carrot Fit Repair Jeans because I like the American flag detail, but I also like the Charley 5.0 Mama Mia Trouser Jeans too because they have

Trouser Jeans

What a way to add glamour without the slop! Of all the jean silhouettes out there, I always feel more dressed up in wide-legged jeans. They look the nicest with a frilly blouse, they’re feminine. If you wear heels, it just works. And plus the fact they’re denim gives them that casual feel. I’ve been meaning to check out the J Brand Bell  Bottom Trouser Jeans, which have a dark wash you can really dress up with sequins or dress down with a tee shirt. Though, I wouldn’t recommend spending the afternoon on the sofa in these…there’s something about all that fabric. But you could actually do it, denim doesn’t really wrinkle!

The beauty of wearing an elastic / pull on Jeg like CHARLEY 5.0 during the Holidays? No button fly digging into your stomach when you’ve eaten just a bit too much. They’re like being in your sweats EXCEPT they’re dressier and hold you in like spanx! Perfect solution to fashion girl problems!

Jennine you are adorable in the Charley 5.0 3-way zips and the cape/cloak. That is such an incredible look!!

The images conjured up by the term “elastic waist” can actually be kind of scary until you think of leggings/jeggings. I’m with you on the jeggings for Thanksgiving…unless I haul out a one piece velour jumpsuit with flare legs and try to do Farrah Fawcett without the amazing hair (sniff). That’s about as fancy as I get…what if I tip off the couch after dinner? hehe

sue…that’s exactly why i love the pull on jeans, they’re great because under clothes you don’t have any hardware digging in.
carrie…hahah it took me a loooong time to get rid of my velour sweats. embarrassingly so.
