Fall is New York’s most flattering season, let me tell you. She sparkles, she glows, she’s crisp and sharp. (Yes, I think of Manhattan as a she.) Aside from the fact that it snowed on Saturday, it’s been lovely – and an absolute dream to dress for.
This is my second autumn in New York (cue the Harry Connick, Jr music), so I’m holding myself to high sartorial expectations. I want to embrace this season in something other than skinny jeans and knee-high boots. Don’t you sometimes just feel like you’re trapped in a rut of sameness? I certainly do, which is why this time around, I’m committed to changing things up. I posted last week about my new-found love for trouser jeans, and now I’m adding flare jeans to my roster of cold-weather alternatives.
Below are my picks for the best four flares of the season. I think a dark wash denim with a high waist is ideal for this time of year, because they can be dressed up and down easily, and when you’re spending close to $200 for a pair of jeans, you want them to be versatile. Black denim can look polished enough for the office with a silk blouse, and easily weekend-ready with a cozy sweater like this.
Some tips on how to wear your fall flares:
- Tuck in your shirt.
- Add a braided belt.
- Elevate your look (and your hem) with wedge booties.
- Tuck in the front of your pull-over sweater and let the rest drape.
- Channel the 1970’s with a faux fur vest.
- For work, pair them with a pointed-toe heel.
- Keep warm by layering under a classic pea coat.
