I’m still having a hard time comprehending that 2011 is just about finished. I mean, where did the year go? Wear did the year go? If you ask me, this was a banner year for denim. We had some really strong trends take hold, and lucky for us, the kind of trends that have staying power and flattering fits. I have a feeling that 2012 will usher in some great new looks and feels in the world of denim, but that the best trends from 2011 will carry through and look great for years to come. Let’s look back, shall we, at my favorite denim trends from this year.
Coated / Waxed Denim
I think the coated or waxed denim trend was one of the more interesting styles to take hold this year. They feel odd to the touch at first, but once you pull on a slim, fitted pair, you see that they dress up as well as leather pants, and don’t hit your wallet nearly as hard. I explored 2 ways to wear a pair of Hudson coated jeans this fall, and Jennine fell for some waxed chocolate legging jeans from J Brand earlier in the year.
This is one trend I was so, so hesitant to get on board with in 2011. I have been a devoted skinny jeans connoisseur since 2007, and I was sure I had settled into a style I would never stray from. However, as a denim blogger I obviously owed to you and to myself to see what all the fuss was about, and – not to be dramatic – but they have changed my life. I fell in love with flares because they require a heel (something else I’m reluctant to wear) and elongate your legs like crazy. From bell bottoms to flares for fall to velvet flares from MiH, Jennine and I both embraced this leggy look in 2011.
The explosion of colored jeans onto the denim scene this year was pretty wild, right? All the sudden you could wear your favorite, most comfortable jeans in any color of the rainbow. Every brand has embraced this trend, which means that it’s one that everyone can wear! Wether you’re loyal to Rag & Bone, J Brand or Paige (I love them all) it’s pretty certain that you picked up a pair of colored jeans in 2011. From what I saw at the Spring/Summer 2012 previews, this look isn’t going anywhere, and only getting more bold – so hold on to your red, blue or green jeans and plan to rock them into the new year!
