Denim Review: Mother Runaway Skinny Flare

Since the holiday season is fully upon us now, I thought it would be fun to put a festive twist on the usual denim review posts. For the next couple of weeks, I’m going to attempt to style up some denim that I think would work perfectly for holiday parties and any festive occasion that might come your way between now and New Year’s Eve.

First up is a cut of jeans I have never tried before (if you can believe it), the skinny flare. It sounds like a contradiction, but I rather like this style. You get the slim fit of a skinny jean with the flattering leg opening of a flare, but minus the dramatic bell shape. I would equate them to a more modern, sleek version of a boot-cut jean. Couple this shape with a cheerful shade of red, and these Mother Denim Runaway Skinny Flares make a perfect party pant.

My goal with this look was to compose an outfit that hits the tricky balance between festive and kitschy. I opted for pumps, a dressier silk blouse, relaxed-fit blazer and my cherished vintage mink coat (passed down from family). The red does so much to acknowledge the season that it’s really the only festive touch you need. Keep sequins, shades of green and reindeer sweaters to a minimum when working your red jeans this time of year.

This is also my first pair of Mother brand jeans, and I wasn’t disappointed. They ride lower in the back than most of my Paige or J Brand jeans, but the denim is soft and has great stretch. I’m wearing my usual size 27, but they’re quite snug, and would venture to guess that i could size up and maintain a nice long line but with a slightly more comfortable fit at the waist.

Are you planning to work some denim into your holiday party circuit this season?
