Denim Review: Madewell Cali Demi Boot Jeans

Brand: Madewell

Cut: Cali demi boot

Wash: Donovan

Rating: 4.5

Hey denim lovers! Boy has it been foggy and damp and cold in the San Francisco area lately. So I was happy for this brief appearance of the sun for our photoshoot the other day.

These Madewell Cali demi boot cut jeans are a new style for me: they have just a hint of flare at the ankle, and are super-high waisted. Most of my high-waisted jeans are either skinny or bell-bottoms, so this is a refreshing silhouette. They are also kind of the ultimate mom jeans.

I tried on several other pairs of jeans at Madewell that I was hoping would work out, but my hip to ratio differential caused major gaping at the waist. These were the winners: no gap, they fit snugly and they’re comfortable.

I did have to go up a size (I usually take a 28 but these are 29), which was a slight injury to my pride (especially after recently losing weight) but I’m working through those emotions.

I like the “Donovan” wash of these jeans a lot. It’s not overly whiskered or too-contrived looking. The high-rise makes me feel like I’m wearing a comfortable girdle—i.e. I feel secure and sucked in. They’re not long-airplane-ride comfortable, but they are wear-to-work all day level.

And the length is perfect because they are technically cropped and I am short (5′ 4″), so they highlight the ankles and shoes nicely. Lastly, I’m into the back pockets because they are sufficiently large. I do not do small pockets on jeans—those are for ladies with a much smaller backside than myself 🙂

I love the style of these jeans! I am the same height as you and I tend to have a hard time getting jeans that I don’t have to cuff! I also generally wear skinnier jeans, but I do want to branch out a little bit more and I was considering these! My only problem is obviously I know that trying jeans on in store is the best option, but I live in Wyoming near no Madewell stores and I do own some of their jeans and have tried a few others on and know my size fairly well! I also have large, pretty muscular calves from 10 years of ballet, and though they’re awesome, sometimes I’m oddly conscious about how jeans fit on them. Out of curiosity, do you think these would be flattering or non-flattering on muscular calves?? Thanks! P.S. I love your blog!

Hi Priscilla! Sorry for my slow reply! I think these might be a good choice for you and your strong calves. I’d say I have average-size calves and the jeans don’t come in contact with them at all. Please let me know how it goes if you try them out! And thanks for the kind words on the blog!! xx
