Denim Review: J Brand Waxed Chocolate Leggings

For those of you who love the leather pants look, but don’t have either the money to buy the perfect pair or were scared off by that episode of Friends where Ross wears the leather pants and gets stuck in the bathroom. Then lo and behold the answer to all of that. Waxed denim. Denim companies started coming out with waxed jeans over the summer, and while I haven’t seen anyone wearing them in real life, I thought I’d give the J Brand Waxed Chocolate Leggings a try.

The Denim

Immediately after taking them out of the bag, I fell in love. They had the perfect sheen and rich color that goes perfectly with this season soft neutrals as well as the standard black. They have a rustic, ‘Old West’ feel about them, yet the fit is clearly urban. The J Brand Waxed Chocolate Leggings are in fact denim leggings, so they have all the comfort and the hold typical of the style of jean. I liked how they were stretchy but not too much and felt they were really slimming without loosing the comfort.

They say that they’re a 9″ rise, but I have to say, that it feels a lot lower than that. I would say that they feel more like a 7.5″ rise because it feels really low. I did have a bit of muffin top when I tried them on, but like a lot of jeans they stretched out really quickly, and before I could leave the house to take photos, I needed a belt. So if you’re trying them on for the first time keep in mind there is quite a bit of give. I’m almost considering going a size down, but I really like how they fit in the legs.

I’ve owned shiny leggings in the past that had a leather look, but they felt really plasticky. This is not the case with waxed denim. It breathes, but with a fabric content of 64% cotton/32% polyester/4% lycra… you do feel the difference from the way regular jeans breathe which typically have a 98% cotton fabric content. But it’s still a lot more wearable and breathable than some of the other leather alternatives. Plus, they’re lightweight enough to wear all year, something you really can’t do with leather pants.

How to wear

The great thing about the waxed denim leggings, is that you can pretty much wear them with anything. A t-shirt, a silk blouse, a wintery cardigan sweater. The waxed/leather look will immediately make your outfit look edgier and more dressed up.  I’m wearing them with a pair of laced up booties which are casual with a dressy edge.

I love the look. Went to try on some of the Gap ones last night & they only had one size zero. Yeah, that’s not going to happen. Too bad these J Brand ones are out of my budget. :-/ They are super cute & I love the color!
