Denim Review: J Brand Colored Skinny Mid-Rise Jeans

by Jennine on June 24, 2011

811 orange j-brand mid-rise skinny jeans

This summer, nothing is hotter than colored denim. It gives a nice break from our indigo roots, colored denim offers a nice way to add life to an outfit while offering the same comfort and fit as your classic pair of jeans. Yesterday, I got in the mail from J Brand, the 811 Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans in orange. As orange is probably the most underrated hue on the color wheel, I decided to give this pair of jeans a spin.

The Denim

This pair of jeans are actually twill, like we talked about earlier this week in the ‘I can’t believe it’s not denim’ post, twill is a fantastic lightweight alternative to denim. Made with the same fabric content as a standard pair of premium jeans, 98% Cotton, 2% Lycra, this offers the same comfort and fit as a pair of jeans. They also run true to size, and for some reason, I keep sizing up with my denim (for fearĀ  of muffin top) but I end up loving the relaxed fit of these skinny jeans.

In addition, I particularly loved the crisp texture of these jeans, and the color is just the right orange, summery and brilliant but not eye-bleedingly so.

How to Wear Colored Jeans

Wearing colored jeans can at first seem intimidating, or maybe a passing trend, but I don’t see it fading away any time soon. Colored denim had been around for a few years now, and still we really only see it on the fashion forward. I personally suggest getting a pair of jeans in a color you love to wear. If you love wearing red, get a pair of red jeans… if you’re more into purple or green, go for it! You’ll love the color no matter what’s in style this season, and chances are you’ll have a lot in your wardrobe that matches with it. Lately, I’ve been loving animal prints and found this C&C California Cheetah Print Blouse… loving it’s soft lightweight fabric and beautiful print, it made the perfect pairing with my orange jeans. True to a the summer spirit and day time style, a nice pair of ballet flats will go with anything, including colored denim.

I am so glad you posted this! I’ve had my eye on colored denim all season. J Brand does it amazingly well. I actually just DIY dyed a pair of vintage Levi’s for a cheap fix. I never thought about getting a twill version. Thanks for the tip.

Hi Liz! They are actually by Kooples… got them on a trip to London. Wish they would come out here!

I looked at these JBrand before, but this post makes me want to purchase them now! Question: I seem to have issues with JBrand sizing, needing to go up a size. Is this your experience too? Haven’t bought any yet because I’m not sure of how they stretch out and if the increased size will end up being a saggy rear end. Thanks!

Hi Leslie!

Oh good question! I’d say they’d run pretty true to size. When you try on your jeans, are you buying them so they fit in the dressing room? When trying on jeans, they should be super snug, because they do stretch out, which causes the ‘saggy bum’ if you bought them fitting in the dressing room. The same is true with J Brand, they do stretch, probably up to 1/2 an inch.

You look fabulous in these colored jeans! That orange is so punchy and perfect for summer. Do you plan on wearing them during winter as well, and if so how? This post makes me long for my old pair of fire engine red jeans.

I am so infatuated with everything orange currently. I’ve started lining my eyes with Make Up Forever’s orange Aqua Cream. It’s so fun. The J Brands are gorgeous, and you are rocking them!

I actually adore coloured denim, although I do not own many your version here is wonderful with it rolled at the hem. I love jBrand’s fit. I recently saw some Zara wide- legged (orange) pants… I think I just need orange in my wardrobe. Thanks. Your flats are beautiful as well. :)

Love these jeans in orange, I am currently lusting over J Brand’s cut-off rigid-denim shorts in red, which are also perfect for the Fourth of July. http://hauteamericana.com/2011/06/gratuitously-american-apparel/

I went in and tried these on (in RED) at barney’s co-op in Brooklyn this weekend. ADORABLE – I really loved the fit…want to pair it with a white button down blouse and some nude flats or even heels for night. I love the orange, but I don’t have the guts to wear ‘em. You look great!

I just bought this pair in Red last week and I love them! I paired mine with Bloch black & white flats with hem rolled up :) I would buy this in shorts as well if the weather here wasn’t so lame in the summer (54 F now)…
