On Sunday, Olivia Coleman surprised the world by beating out Lady Gaga, Glenn Close, Melissa McCarthy and Yalitza Aparicio for the Best Actress Academy Award for her role as Queen Anne in the film The Favourite. I knew zero about her or the film until yesterday, and now I’m obsessed with both.
So much so that I went down a bit of a rabbit hole researching the movie, and came across this interview with Coleman with her costars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz plus the director Yorgos Lanthimos. And of course I had to hit pause when Weisz said all the servants in the film wore repurposed denim.
The Vulture interviewed costume designer Sandy Powell, who dressed the kitchen workers completely in denim. Even the corsets were made of stitched-together jeans. “I had a shopper that went out to every thrift store in the area, and just bought every pair of denim,” Powell said. “It was great, because it’s all different shades of denim worn out in places. So that’s worked really well for the workwear feel of the servants.”
How very chic, practical, sustainable and wonderful of Powell!
