Being a denim blog, we don’t get political around here very much. But we couldn’t overlook a headline this morning about an Egyptian lawyer who said that women deserve to be raped for wearing ripped jeans.
The BBC reports that prominent conservative Nabih al-Wahsh said the following on a TV panel on October: “I say that when a girl walks about like that, it is a patriotic duty to sexually harass her and a national duty to rape her.” He added that women wearing revealing clothing were “inviting men to harass them,” and that “protecting morals is more important than protecting borders.”
And what can your morals possibly be, sir? I’m only grateful that Egyptian authorities acted swiftly by sentencing him to three years in prison in addition to a (comparatively paltry) fine of $1,130.
